The first time I ever “played” the piano I was three years old when my parents were visiting their friends’ house. Something clicked in my brain – I couldn’t believe how much joy bashing the keys and making noise could bring. I had to be dragged away when it was time to leave!

I’ve been playing (and hopefully improving) for more than forty years since then. I’m classically trained, passing all the Royal Schools of Music graded exams, and have played countless gigs as a soloist and as a member of many covers and originals bands.
I have used and heartily recommend the Hal Leonard Piano Method book series for beginners to intermediates. However, my primary motivation is to get you playing what you want to play, and will happily tailor the lessons to put your goals first. Would you or your loved one like to play your favourite TV / film / video game themes? We can make that happen!
I’ve taught students from ages 6 through 80. I’m antiracist, LGBTQI+ friendly, and abhor any kind of discrimination. I’ve also very recently been diagnosed with ADHD and am very happy to take on neurodivergent students. I can relate, and offer a creative approach to keep the easily distracted engaged!
Classes are in-person from my studio, or I can travel to you if you live locally and have your own piano or keyboard set up. Don’t worry if you’re not in the Brighton area – I also offer one-to-one online tuition via Zoom or WhatsApp. All you need is a stable internet connection and a smartphone or laptop.
Testimonials
“If you’re thinking of learning the piano or improving, I thoroughly recommend Alex.
He’s a talented flexible teacher (and player), interested in helping you develop the skills you want to learn, from theoretical musical understanding to being able to play a few songs.
He’s good at making you feel comfortable and therefore confident to get better. I’m sure he’d be as great with kids as he is with the getting on in years, like myself!”

“She really liked that you made her think about the chords, she said she hasn’t had a teacher that’s approached chords that way.
She also likes the changes you made to the fingering “because that actually makes sense”. High praise from my judgemental teenager 😂”
